PREVENT FALLING OBJECTS

Working in the energy sector often involves working at height, which creates a significant risk of dropped objects. These objects can cause serious injury or even fatalities, as well as damage to equipment and property. That's why it's essential to have proper safety measures in place to prevent falling objects and keep workers safe.

Falling object prevention begins with identifying potential hazards and assessing the risks. This involves conducting a thorough site inspection to identify any areas where objects may fall or be dropped, such as scaffolding, cranes, or elevated work platforms.

Once potential hazards have been identified, steps can be taken to prevent these objects from falling. One of the most effective ways to prevent falling objects is to use proper tool tethering techniques. This involves attaching a tether to tools and equipment to prevent them from falling if they are accidentally dropped. Tool tethering can be done in a variety of  ways, depending on the type of tool or equipment being used. For example, lanyards can be used to attach tools to a worker's harness, or retractable tethers can be used to keep tools close to the worker without impeding movement.

Another essential step in falling object prevention is the use of safety nets and barriers. Safety nets are designed to catch falling objects and prevent them from hitting workers or equipment below. Barriers, such as those attached to guardrailing, are also effective in preventing objects from falling if accidentally dropped or kicked. It's important to ensure that safety nets and barriers are properly installed and regularly inspected to ensure that they are in good condition and functioning properly. Any damaged or worn nets or barriers should be repaired or replaced immediately to prevent accidents.

In addition to tool tethering, barriers and safety nets, proper training is essential in preventing dropped objects. Workers should be trained on proper tool handling techniques, including how to secure and tether tools, as well as how to identify potential hazards and take appropriate precautions.

Regular safety meetings and toolbox talks can also help reinforce safe work practices and keep workers informed about potential hazards and best practices for preventing dropped objects. It's also important to ensure that workers have access to the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Hard hats, safety glasses, and other PPE can help protect workers from falling objects and reduce the risk of injury.

Finally, a culture of safety is essential in preventing dropped objects. Employers should prioritize safety and encourage workers to report any potential hazards or unsafe practices. Workers should feel empowered to speak up about safety concerns and be encouraged to take an active role in preventing accidents.
